Upgrade. Moving on up. Remodel. These aren't just phrases for getting a newer car, bigger house, or a modern kitchen. When the tool box no longer fulfills your tool storage and organization needs, it's time to move on up to a tool chest.
Just like any renovation or upgrade, it's wise to analyze and plan. Consider your particular needs now and in the near future. Tool chests come in broad range of sizes - from knee-high to shoulder-high - and organizational solutions. If you need something to keep your tools organized, think about how you prefer to group and store your tools and what annoyances or problems you had with your previous storage system.
Find your purpose
The most durable tool chests will be made of heavy duty polymers and stainless steel. These are stronger than plastic but heavy, especially when loaded with tools. For a mobile tool chest, consider a mobile or rolling tool chest. Look for rolling tool chests with larger wheels for sturdier steering; rubber wheels prevent floor damage. Some of these mobile or rolling chests also feature swiveling sections or a rolling bottom chest and second, tiered section on top with drawers and trays.
Do you need a combination of voluminous open space for drop-and-go storage or bigger tools and smaller drawers and trays for organization of smaller tools? Does the tool chest have accessory options for customization?
Also consider where you will store your tool chest. If it will be left outside in the elements, purchase one with rust-resistant protection. Is there room in your garage or basement for it? Measure the area where you plan to keep your tool chest before you select and order it. Then go shop, fix, and create!
